Description
Before the Internet kicked in, reggae fans in Europe depended on magazines like Natty Dread to keep them up to scratch with trends in Jamaica.

That publication called it a day five years ago but its editor, Thibault Ehrengardt, has a fascination with Jamaica that transcends music. His second book, The History of Jamaica From 1494 to 1838, is proof of this.

Ehrengardt revisits the coming of Christopher Columbus and the Spaniards in 1494 to emancipation in 1838 when Britain owned Jamaica.

He paints a vivid picture of the period by looking at the flamboyant buccaneers, the thriving sugar industry, the Maroons and slavery.

Ehrengardt does so through recollections from English legislators like Edward Long, Hans Sloane, Charles Leslie and Bryan Edwards, who were all posted on the island.

The History of Jamaica is the culmination of 16 years of research in France and Jamaica conducted by Ehrengardt.
